Sketching Collierville Town Square
On December 1st we had a wonderful sketch group in conjunction with Plein Air Memphis. Here are most of us before we set out to sketch and paint.
A couple of sketches
More sketches - looking at everyone's work is one of the best parts of the sketch group
We also got to see all of the paintings that the Plein Air Painters made, too!
Here is a lovely sketch by Nancy Mardis.
And one by Tom Pellett, and one below by me, Elizabeth Alley.

Memphis Urban Sketchers at ANF Architects
Memphis Urban Sketchers is excited to announce our first exhibit! ANF Architects is hosting an exhibit of sketches by nearly 20 of our regular participants. In addition to sketches from all over Memphis, Collierville, and a few from around the world, entire sketchbooks will be featured at the opening reception.
Participants include Martha Kelly, whose urban sketching has been featured in a Memphis calendar and Memphis Magazine's City Guide, local painting legend Peter Bowman, and local illustrator Derrick Dent, in addition to artists, architects, art teachers, designers and dabblers.
Memphis Urban Sketchers meets the first Saturday of every month to sketch and visit, and have been since September of 2010. We are affiliated with Urban Sketchers (USk), an international group who share the interest of drawing on location and telling the story of their surroundings. All skill levels are welcome, and participants are free to attend at their convenience.
Memphis Urban Sketchers follows the USk Manifesto:
1. We draw on location, indoors or out, capturing what we see from direct observation. 2. Our drawings tell the story of our surroundings, the places we live and where we travel. 3. Our drawings are a record of time and place. 4. We are truthful to the scenes we witness. 5. We use any kind of media and cherish our individual styles. 6. We support each other and draw together. 7. We share our drawings online (and off). 8. We show the world, one drawing at a time.
Please join us at the opening reception as we show Memphis, one drawing at a time.

Sketching At Shady Grove Presbyterian Church
We met on November 3rd at Shady Grove Presbyterian church in East Memphis on a LOVELY fall day to sketch. There was a race going on, a band was playing and breakfast burritos were being served. We found a quiet courtyard that we had all to ourselves, but where we could still hear the festivities.

Shady Grove Presbyterian
Our group met at Shady Grove on the morning of the Race for Grace. It was fun to have all the activity buzzing around us. I sketched the church first - the fall colors and the setting moon caught my eye.
The music exceeded expectations. There was a brass band playing for the end of the race, and it was wonderful. My sister used to live in New Orleans, and I just love that sound. Musicians also make for a fun sketching opportunity. I don't draw people that often, but the people I draw are quite often the bands my husband and I go hear.
I finished up the morning by joining the rest of our group in the more secluded courtyard. I'm always a sucker for interesting trees, and this one was lovely.

Mary K. VanGieson - rock garden chair
Sketching at Shady Grove Presbyterian Church
I was thwarted at every turn by orange cones & police cars. Guess I should have come earlier to avoid the run. Glad you made it. I've been sketching the falling down chair in my rock garden instead. Lovely day.Monday, October 29, 2012

Not sure where to tell you meet, so just try to find me!
Shady Grove Presbyterian Church is architecturally interesting, and the Race for Grace starts at the church at 9:00 so there will be a lot of activity. Plus we can sketch inside if it is too chilly out. They have asked that we not use paint/water if we sketch indoors.
