Fire Station on Mendenhall

I have gotten into the habit of sketching whenever I stop for an errand. Mostly I go to the grocery store - the fancy Kroger on Mendenhall, because it's on my way home and, as I said, it's fancy.

This fire station is right next door, so when I park facing south I sketch it. These are all from this summer.

Idlewild Interior

Here is my sketch of the interior at Idlewild Presbyterian from a couple of weeks ago. I was so proud of myself for not getting overwhelmed and chickening out! I just thought about all of the great instruction I got at the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Santo Domingo, and I felt pretty comfortable tackling such a large area with so much going on. One of the tips I learned is using the white of the paper to help show shape and mass, and it really worked here.

More Sketches from Idlewild

Here are sketches by Joe Wieronski from last Saturday's sketch group at Idlewild Presbyterian Church. Great line work.

The detail of the pipe organ is Joe's favorite, but I'd have a hard time picking.

What a beautiful church, but almost too much to draw - especially loved the windows and
the floor.  Someday I'll sketch in color.  It was a wonderful morning.  Mary K. VanGieson

Idlewild Presbyterian Church

This month we sketched inside Idlewild Presbyterian Church since it was so hot outside.  I've never been inside before and it was beautiful.  I love older churches.  It was probably one of the most quiet places I've ever sketched until a lady started practicing on the organ.  I read later that it was built by the Bedient Pipe Organ Company, and was designed after the precepts of 18th and early 19th century organs in France.

More Sketches by Tom Pellett

These pictures aren't great, but the sketches sure are. These are more sketches by Tom Pellett.

Sketching at Idlewild Presbyterian Church

Idlewild Presbyterian Church was a great place to do some indoor sketching on a hot summer day. As you can see from the sketches, the church is beautiful.
Lots of great stained glass windows
 And arches

Hopefully we can come back and sketch the exterior. Matthew Lee braved the heat and painted outside.

Urban Sketching show tonight

"Places of Desire: watercolors of Greece and Turkey" opens tonight at Playhouse on the Square. Please come out and have a glass of wine with us from 6:00-7:30 if you're able to. I spent three weeks traveling in June and July and came home with a stack of urban sketches. It was fun to get a last minute exhibition and be able to show them while the trip is still fresh. I'd love to hear what other urban sketchers think about them. The show will be up until September 16th.
