We had an extra meeting for Memphis Urban Sketchers yesterday to draw the Outdoors, Inc. Canoe and Kayak Race yesterday. The race is a Memphis tradition, in its 31st year and some 200 boats strong.

I sketched a tent at the park while we were waiting for the racers to get in sight, and then did a much quicker study of the boats paddling up the harbor towards the finish line and an even quicker sketch of the finish line itself, with the orange buoys.
Finally I sketched some folks relaxing after the race. I loved the colorful quilt they had laid out.

Sketches by the rest of our group:

From the Top Floor

This is one of those "try to sketch everything I see" sketches from the top floor of the Central Library.

Sketching at the Central Library

We had a great time sketching at the Central Library. A few of us went to the top floor to capture the great views.

The public art in the library was also a great subject for sketching.

When I left I found Carl Fox sitting outside with his tempera paints, painting the outside of the library.

Library Sketches by Tom Pellett

I am always happy to see Tom Pellett at our sketch groups and enjoy seeing his work at the end of the day. His use of line is really incredible!

Library Sketch by Peter Bowman

Peter Bowman has attended the last few sketch outings we've had, including this last one at the Central Library.

His use of color in his sketches makes this more like a fully realized painting in a sketchbook. This is a view from the top floor, looking out at the houses below on Walnut Grove.
